Hand Surface

The surface area of a patient's palm (including fingers) is about 1% total body surface area. It is commonly taught in emergency medicine courses but is yet to be. Palmar surface can be used to estimate relatively small burns (< 15% of total surface area) or very large burns (> 85%, when unburnt skin is counted).

The accuracy of this method tends to decrease when used to estimate larger surface areas.
